Ultimate Diesel Tuning Tips.
Lets discuss our Ultimate Diesel Tuning Tips. We we go into more detail in the future, but for now, lets start the conversation.
When you spend as much time as we do tuning turbo diesels you start to notice a few things. Let’s take a deep dive into our ultimate diesel tuning tips and some more general advice about all things ECU remapping and tuning.
If you’re someone who want’s to know what happens when your vehicle has an updated ecu flash, read on. Fortunately we have a wealth of experience in all manner of vehicle tuning which puts us in the driver’s seat when it comes to writing not only high performing tunes, but tunes which retain OEM drivability and reliability.
Ok, we’ve wasted enough time; let’s get started with our ultimate diesel tuning tips.
1] Be mindful of drivability – not just peak power numbers.
In some senses, getting more power from a diesel engine is less challenging than, say, a high revving petrol engine. This makes diesel tuning a playground for the inexperienced and the peak power chasers. One of the biggest factors in retaining drivability is a smooth power curve which results in a more linear power delivery. This also has a big impact on drivetrain longevity, as you can imagine twice the factory power being suddenly slammed through the driveline is not going to result in a happy vehicle.
Often, a good reference point cited is the “area under the curve”. When examining dyno graphs it is important to consider where and when the power is being delivered. Think about where and how you drive your vehicle and consider the implications or limitations of any tune. We could go on all day but, to summarise this into an easily digestible tip, worthy of being called an ultimate diesel tip I would say don’t be bamboozled by peak numbers, look a bit closer.
2] Make changes based on how you drive your vehicle.
In terms of ultimate diesel tuning tips it would be remiss of us not to discuss the total picture of how you intend to modify your truck and what you want to to get out of it. Just like ECU remapping takes advantage of marginal gains in power, you need to consider what aspects of your vehicle you want to optimise for and what sacrifices you’re willing to make. Always consider what you are going to do most with the vehicle. Those mud tyres that are awesome twice a year but are horrible on the road? That straight through exhaust that frees up a couple of horsepower but sounds like something out of Mad Max? We’ve all been there but all I’m saying is, consider which modifications are going to make the biggest difference for the most gains.
When considering an ECU remap you can take things up a level and maximise performance with supporting modifications like uprated intercoolers and exhausts. Again, ultimately, it comes down to bang for your buck and making a car that you can live with everyday or something that is as extreme as you need on the weekend. The choice is yours.
3] Maintenance. Maintenance. Maintenance.
When we talk about tuning the ultimate diesel, just like tuning any other car or truck, we are talking about optimisation. Before you consider tuning, or any other modifications you need to ensure your ‘ducks are in a row’ so to speak. You can’t optimise an engine that isn’t already running at its best. When it comes to ECU tuning our first step is always to complete a full diagnosis and health check to ensure your vehicle is running at its best.
Two obvious points in the diesel tuning equation are ensuring you’re not losing power with caked up intakes and EGR valves. A growing trend in the diesel tuning marketplace to reduce some of this build up is the fitment of oil catch cans but that is a story for another day. The other key point in your diesel system is, if relevant to your vehicle to ensure that your diesel particulate filter is functioning correctly and not creating unnecessary stress on the system. Typically, diesel tuning, when done within normal operating parameters will not have a negative effective on the system however we always recommend using the best available lubricants and adhering strictly to the advised service schedule.
In a lot of ways, these three tips merely scratch the surface when it comes to ‘ultimate diesel tuning’ however they are also important points to consider. Keeping your vehicle running at its peak means taking the time to optimise the system. It’s true, there’s no such thing as a free lunch which means if you want to make extra power you can’t afford to cut corners.
